                                    SOUTHEND

Bairdstravel  enjoyed his time at the bottom of Scotland. It`s a good 3.5 hours drive from Glasgow but well worth it . The sun was shinning and the beach was very inviting.

Southend is the main settlement at the southern end of the Kintyre peninsula, Argyll and Bute, Scotland.  It lies 8 miles south of Campbeltown, the main town in the area. The parish of Southend comprises the village and the surrounding land, used mainly for farming and forestry. The population of the parish is approximately 500.

The village is located beside Dunaverty Bay, which at one end has a rocky promintory called Dunaverty Rock, where a fort was located. It is reputed that during the Dunaverty Massacre the Catholic MacDonald's were burned alive in their stronghold at Dunaverty Castle (the trenches of this can still be seen).

The village is also reputed to be the location where Saint Columba first set foot in Scotland. On a rock near the village are footprints (Petrosomatoglyphs) called Columba's Footprints where it is claimed he first preached on Scottish soil, after being banished from Ireland.

The Antrim coast of Northern Ireland is only 12 miles away and is visible from Southend in clear weather.

Within Southend parish there is a Church of Scotland church, primary school, National Health Service surgery (open Monday-Friday), village hall, playing field, 18-hole golf course, caravan and camp-site, hotel and a shop with tea-room. The main employment sources are farming and tourism related business.

Sanda lies two miles south of Southend, and can be visited on boat trips from Campbeltown.

Where to stay in Southend

Bairdstravel had the the pleasure of enjoying a beer in the beer garden of the

Argyll Arms.

The Argyll Arms Hotel is located in the beautiful village of Southend on the Kintyre peninsula. The village of Southend is located 10 miles south of Campbeltown and lies on the south tip of Kintyre and only a short distance from the famous Mull of Kintyre.

Sanda is a small privately owned island in Argyll and Bute, off the southern tip of the Kintyre peninsula, near Southend and Dunaverty Castle.

Sanda can be seen from the southern tip of the Kintyre peninsula and from the Isle of Arran on clear days. It is known locally on Arran as "Spoon Island" because of its resemblance to an upturned spoon when viewed from the South coast of the island.

In the 2001 census, Sanda was one of four Scottish islands with a population of one person. However, since then there has been some development, and the island subsequently had a population of 3. In August 2008 the island was put up for sale by the husband and wife owners as a result of their separation at a price of £3.2 million, and in January 2009 they announced that a sole caretaker would be resident until spring viewings re-commenced.The island finally sold to Swiss businessman Michi Meier for the lower price of £2.5 million. The island's growth as a tourist destination may come to an end under the new owner who has stated that he wants the island for personal use
