                                  NEWQUAY 1988

The Baird family had their summer holiday at the Cornwall resort of Newquay. Weather was fab and the food was brill. We stayed at the
St Francis hotel . No longer in buisness.
Bairdstravel took the Holidaymakers Express from Glasgow to Newquay .
The train trip took 12 hours . The long journey was well worth it .

Newquay`s beaches are the best I have been to in the U.K.

 Towan Beach
Towan beach is next to the Harbour, being a very popular sandy beach complete with a sea water pool. It is the most sheltered beach and has restrictions on surfing in the summer due to its popularity, the sea is calmer here, more suitable for bathers. On the promenade you will find the "Sea Life Centre", and connected by suspension bridge is the "Island" where you will find tea rooms.

Fistral Beach Fistral can be divided into 3 areas: main Fistral, south Fistral and little Fistral. Main Fistral and south Fistral are joined together and are aesthetically similar having a wide stretch of golden sand. Like all of Newquay's beaches the tide goes out a long way creating plenty of space for various games and activities for the whole family to enjoy. At each end of these beaches there are rocky aspects producing many fascinating rock pools at low tide.
At the back of Fistral is the foot path linking the 2 ends of the beach which runs between Newquay golf course and the sand dunes. The dunes are a protected area having fences to protect the delicate wild life that the grasses support. During the peak season there is a surf village in the main Fistral car park to promote the major surf competitions creating a lively atmosphere; the Radio 1 Road Show is held here in August and at certain times there are live bands playing in this area

 Tolcarne in newquay cornwall

Tolcarne Beach This beach is very popular with boogie boarders, especially at high tide where the waves break close to the shoreline. It is a large sandy beach which enjoys the sun all day and is sheltered so popular with sunbathers. The beach has a distinctive appearance due to its array of different coloured beach huts available for hire; there is also a roadside promenade which overlooks the beach and has spectacular views of the coast.

TATE MODERN ST IVES

A stunning gallery overlooking the beach at St Ives, the Tate hosts exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, with a Cornish flavour. While you are in St Ives, you can also visit Barbara Hepworth’s hidden and atmospheric sculpture garden.

SEAL SANCTUARY

Voted best tourist attraction in Cornwall, the National Seal Sanctuary at Gweek is Britain’s leading marine rescue centre. You can find it on the Helford Estuary and it is well worth a visit.

 ANDREW ON ST MARYS  SCILLY

Bairdstravel took the boat from Newquay to the Scilly island . Sun was shinning . We had a few beers and ate our packed lunch on St Mary.
Great trip .

Below is details of the trip from the Scillonian website.

Sail to the Scilly Isles aboard Scillonian III. Departing Penzance Quay, Scillonian III sails past Newlyn, Mousehole, the Minack Theatre, and Wolf Rock Lighthouse. An informative commentary is broadcast during the start of your trip towards Scilly. Your first glimpse of the islands as you approach through Crow Sound or around St. Mary's, is a magical discovery of this wonderful world apart.

Bairdstravel passed Land`s end on the boat trip to the Isles of Scilly

Land's End  is a headland on the Penwith peninsula, located near Penzance in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom.

It is the most westerly tip of the southern mainland (for Great Britain as a whole it is Corrachadh Mòr, Ardnamurchan, Scotland which is 22 miles further west). It is often thought to be the most southerly point in the British mainland, but that honour in fact falls to Lizard Point, a few miles to the south-east. Visible from Land's End is the Longships Lighthouse. The Longships, a few miles out, is a serpentine and quartz island. Offshore, midway between Land's End and the Isles of Scilly.
