The original "new castle" was built by the Normans in 1080. The city's wealth has always been based around the River Tyne. After wool and then, most famously, coal, the city's mining, shipbuilding and engineering industries subsequently flourished. Their legacy can be discovered throughout the city. Now, the river and the new arts centres on the Quayside are at the heart of 21st-century social and economic development. Newcastle, on the north bank of the Tyne, with Gateshead its reflection on the south bank, is a welcoming city with a vibrant nightlife and a bright future.
