Luss Loch Lomond`s little hamlet

Bairdstravel took the high road to Luss . Luss is on the west bank of the stunning Loch Lomond.

Famous for the filming of STV drama Take the High road .
You get  great views of Ben Lomond from here .

Luss  is a village in Argyll & Bute.

Historically in the County of Dunbarton, its original name is Clachan dubh, or 'dark village'. Ben Lomond, the most southerly Munro, dominates the view north over the loch, and the Luss Hills rise to the west of the village.

Nowadays Luss is a conservation village, with a bypass carrying the busy A82 trunk road. Many of Luss' cottages are described as 'picturesque'. There is a Kiltmaker and a Bagpipe Works.

In recent years, Luss became famous as a result of being the main outdoor location for the Scottish Television drama series Take the High Road. Despite the fact that the programme is no longer made, Luss still plays up its television connection, and uses its fictional name 'Glendarroch' on some of the buildings.

Take the High Road was a soap opera produced by Scottish Television, and set in the fictional village of Glendarroch (exteriors were filmed in the real-life village of Luss on the banks of Loch Lomond). It started in February 1980 as an ITV daytime soap opera, and was dropped by the network in 1993, although various members of the ITV Network (notably Central Television) continued to screen the programme, while others (such as Yorkshire Television and Carlton Television) had no interest in doing so. In 1994, the series' name was changed to just High Road, and from then on it continued to be produced by Scottish Television, for a Scottish audience, until it was cancelled in April 2003.

Take the High Road will be remembered for its changes and, at times, its very stereotyped casting of a Scottish village, rather than its fame as a soap, although its way of bringing together modernity with the old ways of the country really give it credit.

During its run, Take the High Road was always one of the highest-rated television programmes in Scotland, and had an extremely loyal following throughout the rest of the UK. Indeed, when the series was cancelled by the ITV Network, so many protests were received from viewers in England that some ITV regions re-instated the programme.

Luss Parish Church is a Church of Scotland church in Luss, Argyll and Bute dedicated to Saint Kessog. The current minister is the Reverend Dane Sherrard, who joined in December 1998. The present church building was constructed in 1875, and subject to major restoration works in 2001. The church site has had 1500 years of continuous Christian presence, being originally founded by Saint Kessog, and has 15 listed ancient monuments in its graveyard.

The village also hosts a water taxi service to Balloch, at the south of the loch, allowing visitors to transfer on into Glasgow by train or visit its shopping centre, Lomond Shores. Luss Pier is a popular starting point for boat trips on the loch.
