  RICK ELLIOTT  VISITS A QUEEN

Bairdstravel lives in Clydebank ,Scotland . Home of the John Browns ship yard. Shipyard was famous for building some of the most  famous liners in the world. When on twitter I found out that Rick was to have a day out at the Queen Mary in Long beach I asked him if he  would send us a few photographs .   So here they are

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you so much Rick for taking the time to show us your time at the Queen Mary . I was forward this page to all my ex John Browns friends .

John Brown and Company of Clydebank,  Scotland, was a pre-eminent marine engineering and shipbuilding firm, responsible for building many notable and world-famous ships, such as the RMS Lusitania, the HMS Hood, the HMS Repulse, the RMS Queen Mary, the RMS Queen Elizabeth, and the RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 (often referred to as the QE2). At their height, from 1900 to the 1950s, they were one of the most highly regarded, and internationally famous, shipbuilding companies in the world. However after that time, along with other UK shipbuilders, they found it increasingly difficult to compete with the emerging shipyards in Eastern Europe and the far East.

There was already a Clyde turbine steamer named Queen Mary, so Cunard White Star reached agreement with the owners that the existing steamer would be renamed TS Queen Mary II, and in 1934 the new liner was launched by Queen Mary as RMS Queen Mary. On her way down the slipway, the Queen Mary was slowed by eighteen drag chains, which checked the liner's progress into the Clyde, a portion of which had been widened to accommodate the launch.
