                 LANDSHUT

Our hotel in Landshut

The Weihenstephaner Stuben is a hotel in Landshut, a city lying on the river Isar in Bavaria. This 3-star hotel in ideal for both business or leisure travellers in the Niederbayern province and is ideally situated near Munich airport, just 5 minutes from the central train station and easily accessible from the motorway.

The hotel offers private parking, a restaurant serving international and regional cuisine, a bar with a beer garden serving beer from the oldest brewery in the world, and an attentive and friendly personal. There are also function rooms for guests wishing to organise meeting or receptions. Guests visiting Bavaria for a holiday in Germany or for a business trip near Munich will find that this Landshut hotel is an ideal destination.

Landshut (Austro-Bavarian: Landshuad) is a city in Bavaria in the south-east of Germany, belonging to both Eastern and Southern Bavaria. Situated on the banks of the River Isar, Landshut acts is the capital of Lower Bavaria, one of the seven administrative regions of the Free State of Bavaria. It is also the seat of the surrounding district.

With a population of over 60,000 inhabitants, Landshut is the largest city in Lower Bavaria, followed by Passau and Straubing, as well as Eastern Bavaria's second biggest city after Regensburg.

Owing to its characteristic coat of arms, the city is also often called "Three Helmets City" (German: Dreihelmenstadt).

Due to its proximity and easy access to Munich and the Franz Josef Strauss International Airport, situated halfway between Munich and Landshut on the banks of the Isar, the city has East Bavaria's lowest unemployment rate (ca. 4.2% in October 2006), lower than the Bavarian average of ca. 5.8%.

The city is of national importance because of its predominantly Gothic architecture within the historic city center, especially Trausnitz Castle and the Church of Saint Martin featuring the world's tallest brick tower. Among other Gothic architecture are the churches St. Jodok and Holy Spirit, but also the Town Hall and the Ländtor, the only still existing gate of the medieval fortification.

Landshut is also known for a festival celebrated every four years called the Landshuter Hochzeit, commemorating the 1475 marriage of George of Bavaria and Jadwiga Jagiellon.

The renaissance era originated especially the decorated inner courtyard of the Trausnitz Castle and the ducal Landshut Residence in the inner city. Baroque churches are the Jesuit church St. Ignatius, the Dominican church St. Blasius and the church of St. Joseph. Also the medieval churches of the Seligenthal Monastery and of the Cistercians were redesigned in baroque style. Many old middle-class houses of the past in the Old Town still represent the history of the city from the Gothic times to the Neo-Classicism.

 TWIN TOWNS

One of the oldest town - twinnings in Germany was established in 1956.
The representatives of both towns wanted to mark the end of the postwar era and to signal the coming of a new epoch characterized by peaceful cooperation and friendship between the nations of Europe.
Elgin is situated in the North-East of Scotland, only six miles away from the sea, and it has a population of about 25,000. With the reform of local government in 1974, Elgin lost its status as an independent borough. It was incorporated into Moray District and is now the seat of the District Administration. Moray is known for its mild climate and pleasant landscape. The ruins of what was once the most beautiful cathedral in Northern Britain are still an important sight to see for every visitor. Moray´s economy is dominated by the numerous well-known whisky distilleries and by agriculture.
Even though the two towns are 2000 miles apart, the enduring friendship manifests itself in a wealth of contacts between associations and schools. Today there is hardly an association or club in Landshut that has not yet struck up friendly relations with its Scottish counterpart. The reason may be that there is a certain affinity between the mentality of the Scots and that of the Bavarians, which is in a tongue-in-cheek way seen as a consequence of the fact that the Scots have had "problems" with the English similar to those the Bavarians have had with the "Prussians" from the North of Germany.
In 1986 the Elgin-Landshut Twin Town Association was founded in Elgin and one year later the "Verein Landshut-Elgin" was established in Landshut. Today the Landshut Association has about 270 members. In spite of the great distance between the two cities, there are annual trips to the twin towns. The groups from Landshut travel to Elgin in the even years and the Elgin people come to Landshut in the odd years. Thus giving the Scots the opportunity to enjoy the mediaeval festival of the "Landshuter Hochzeit 1475" (Royal Wedding of 1475). In 1996, at the 40th anniversary of the twinning, a brass plaque was installed in the pavement in front of Landshut´s Town Hall as a symbol of the friendship between   cities .
