KAREN IN SALZBURG
Bairdstravel would like to thank Karen Nichols from Scotia Heritage for
letting us display her wonderful holiday in Austria. Karen was based in
stunning Salzburg. The photographs were taken in 2007.
The name Salzburg means "Salt Castle". It derives its name from the barges' carrying salt on the Salzach River, which were subject to a toll in the 8th century, as was customary for many communities and cities on European rivers.

Salzburg is on the banks of the Salzach River, at the northern boundary of the Alps. The mountains to Salzburg's south contrast with the rolling plains to the north. The closest alpine peak– the 1972 m Untersberg– is only a few km from the city centre. The Altstadt, or "old town", is dominated by its baroque towers and churches.

Cruise on the river Salzach
The Salzach is a river in Austria and Germany. It is a right tributary of the Inn and is 225 kilometres (140 mi) in length.
The river's name is derived from the German word Salz, meaning "salt". Until the 19th century shipping of salt down the river was an important part of the local economy. The shipping ended when railways replaced the old transport system.
It is the main river of the Austrian state of Salzburg. The source is located in the Kitzbühel Alps near Krimml, Salzburg. From here it runs eastwards until Schwarzach im Pongau, then turns northwards and passes the cities of Hallein and Salzburg. Then it forms the border between Bavaria, Germany and Austria for almost 70 kilometres (43 mi).

Then it was paraded around walls showing the diffrent colours so beseigers thought the beseiged had lots of food. The journey ended with the boat turning circles, on automatic, doing a waltz to the sound of Mozart!

Mozart showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood in Salzburg. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty; at 17 he was engaged as a court musician in Salzburg, but grew restless and traveled in search of a better position, always composing abundantly. While visiting Vienna in 1781, he was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He chose to stay in the capital, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years in Vienna, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, and operas, and portions of the Requiem, which was largely unfinished at the time of Mozart's death. The circumstances of his early death have been much mythologized. He was survived by his wife Constanze and two sons.

St. Gilgen's in the Lakes
Sankt Gilgen is a picturesque village by the Wolfgangsee in the Austrian state of Salzburg, in the "Salzkammergut" region.
Sankt Gilgen is situated in the south-western shore of the lake Wolfgangsee, close to Strobl and to the Upper Austrian municipality of St. Wolfgang. It has 3,753 inhabitants, lies 545 metres above sea level and covers an area of 98.67 square kilometres.
St. Gilgen is a well-known travel destination. Boats from St. Gilgen sail around the Wolfgangsee, providing transport and views of the surrounding mountains. The hermitage of the original St. Gilgen may be seen, behind a chapel, in the Falkenstein cliffs west of St. Wolfgang and east of Fürberg.
