The city of Kraków is the capital city of the Malopolskie (Lesser Poland or Little Poland) province in the southern region of Poland. It covers both banks of the Wisla river (or Vistula) river. Uplands region at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains. It is Poland's third largest city, with a population of 756,000 in 2007 (1.4 million after including surrounding communities).
Public transport is based around a fairly dense network of tramway and bus lines operated by a municipal company, supplemented by a number of private minibus operators. Local trains connect some of the suburbs. The bulk of the city’s historic area has been turned into a pedestrian zone with rickshaws and horse buggies; however, the tramlines run within a three-block radius.
Rail connections are available to most Polish cities. Trains to Warsaw depart every hour. International destinations include Berlin, Budapest, Prague, Hamburg, Lvov, Kiev, and Odessa (June–September). The main railway station is located just outside the Old Town District and is well-served by public transport.

Rynek Glowny (Main Marketplace) - a fine mediaeval square at the heart of the Old City, currently being repaved and beautified, festooned with churches, restaurants and bars. It is the biggest mediaeval marketplace worldwide with more than four hectares of area and twelve streets beginning here.
Wawel Cathedral was built about 1000 A.D. in preromanesque style and destroyed several times. It is now the third cathedral since 1322. Through more than 1000 years of its existence the cathedral was surrounded by chapels, founded by members of the ruling dynasties, bishops and some magnate families. In the 17th century the cathedral was fenced with a wall with three baroque gates.
