Amsterdam spreads out south from the Amsterdam Central railway station. The Damrak is the main street and leads into the street Rokin. The oldest area of the town is known as de Wallen (the walls), after the medieval city walls. It lies to the east of Damrak and contains the city's famous red light district. To the south of de Wallen is the old Jewish quarter of Waterlooplein. The 17th century girdle of concentric canals, known as the Grachtengordel, embraces the heart of the city. Beyond the Grachtengordel are the formerly working class areas of Jordaan and de Pijp.
The Museumplein with the city's major museums, the Vondelpark, a 19th century park named after the Dutch writer Joost van den Vondel, and the Plantage neighborhood, with the zoo, are also located outside the Grachtengordel.

ANDY BAIRD`S BIRTHDAY TRIP
On May 2003 Bairdstravel took a party over to Amsterdam to celebrate his sons 18th birthday . We flew Easyjet from Glasgow and stayed at the hotel Acro.

Within 5 minutes you’re on the famous Leidseplein with its many bars, clubs and variety of restaurants. Halfway you’ll find the Holland casino and the P.C. Hooftstraat where all the top designers of the world have their exclusive shops. The Albert Cuyp openair market is only 10 minutes walk from the hotel, in the cosy and hip neighbourhood the ‘Pijp’.

VOLENDAM

Volendam is a popular tourist attraction in the Netherlands, well-known for its old fishing boats and the traditional clothing still worn by some residents. The women's costume of Volendam, with its high, pointed bonnet, is one of the most recognizable of the Dutch traditional costumes, and is often featured on tourist postcards and posters (although there are believed to be fewer than 50 women now wearing the costume as part of their daily lives, most of them elderly). There is a regular ferry connection to Marken, a peninsula close by. Volendam also features a small museum about its history and clothing style, and visitors can have their pictures taken in traditional Dutch costumes.
