               WATCH BAIRDS TRAVEL IN GOTHENBURG
                         GOTHENBURG

Another great city to visit in Sweden. Afternoon flight from Prestwick .

Ryanair got us there in under 2 hrs. We arrive into a very small airport.

We had picked a hotel right next to the train station. Very central. Hotel Rica was our base book through Hotel.com.

First night we had a Burger king to save money . The Whopper just tasted like Glasgow. After our hamburger we head out to see Gothenburg .

Nice city. Strange  feels like a small town .

Up early next day for breakfast . For a walk round the city.

In the evening we walk up to Gothenburg`s main nightlife the  Avenyn.

We have dinner in the highlander [and a few beers]. Great part of the city . More details below .

The next day we visited the  Maritiman Maritime Centre.

Which is a fun hands on kind of place. First time ever down below in a submarine.

The Sub is called Nordkaparen. Very enclosed .

Strange name for a museum .Great place to visit in Gothenburg.

Gothenburg is a city founded in the beginning of the 17th century by the Swedish King, Gustav II Adolf. It was once the center of the Swedish ship-building industry but with rising competition from foreign ship wharves, many of the dry docks had to close down. Much of the inner harbor area has changed from industrial ship building to high technology and education, representative of the general change in the city. Today Gothenburg has both international sporting events, concerts, and conventions.

Leave the car behind and take the tram .
Taking the tram is one of the nicest ways of getting around in Göteborg. The city has 204 trams which operate 11 routes, as well as buses and archipelago ferries. The Älvsnabben ferry provides services along the harbour. The journeys are included in the same public transport ticket.

Gothenburg also uses the world's most modern system for electronic traffic planning. The city's tram and bus stops have signs showing exactly when the next tram or bus is due. The easiest way is to buy tickets in advance from Tidpunkten or Pressbyrån shops.Travel for free with the Göteborg Pass.
Below is a great guide to the city.

Tourist information

There are two tourist information office Gothenburg - one in the Nordstan shopping center (next to the central train station) and one on Kungsportsplatsen about ten minutes walk from Nordstan. Gothenburg's official tourist website is another source of information .

Gothenburg, with its location by the sea, is famous for the quality and variety of its seafood dishes. Various fish restaurants exist in the city, from low-class shacks to world-class eateries. The city also has a number of star chefs – over the past decade, seven of the Swedish Chef of the Year Awards have been won by Gothenburgers. A popular place to buy fish ingredients is the Feskekôrka ("Fish Church"); an indoor fish market which got its name from the building's resemblance to a Gothic church. Five Gothenburg restaurants have a star in the 2008 Michelin Guide: 28 +, Basement, Fond, Kock & Vin and Sjömagasinet.

WHERE WE STAYED

RICA HOTEL

Bairdstravel stay at the Rica hotel

Located right in the centre of Gothenburg, a stone's throw from the Central Station the Rica Hotel Göteborg is close to the city’s main tourist attractions, business district, shops, restaurants and entertainment venues.

Close by you will find the Swedish Exhibition Centre, Ullevi Stadium, Liseberg Amusement Park, Gothenburg Central Avenue, the Opera House and Nordstan, the largest shopping centre in northern Europe. Goteborg Landvetter Airport is the nearest airport, located 26km away.

The hotel’s 97 newly renovated spacious rooms have modern furnishings based on Scandinavian design, with lovely bright colours and natural materials.

The hotel does not have its own restaurant, but there are plenty of restaurants just a walk away to cater for every taste. The hotel will be happy to help you find a suitable restaurant.

                                          Avenyn

Bairdstravel enjoyed a few beers in the flying Scotsman. Which is situated
on the famous Avenue.   Avenyn is the undisputed centre of Gothenburg night life, with a lot of bars, late hours and throngs of people. Most places close at 3, but it is easy to find places that are open until 5, at least on the weekends. The average age varies from place to place, from Valand which caters to a younger crowd to places like Bubbles which cater to the 30+ visitor.

Public transport

With over 80 km of double track the Gothenburg tram is the largest tram/light rail network in Scandinavia. The bus network, however, is almost as important. There are also some boat and ferry services. The lack of a subway is due to the soft ground on which Göteborg is situated. Tunneling is very expensive in such conditions. There is also a commuter rail in Gothenburg servicing nearby some nearby cities and villages

                  Main football ground

Ullevi, Ullevi Stadium or Nya Ullevi as it is referred to by the inhabitants, meaning New Ullevi, to distinguish it from Gamla Ullevi (Old Ullevi), is a stadium in Gothenburg, Sweden. The stadium is also the biggest in Scandinavia. It was opened in 1958, its original use was as a venue for the 1958 World Cup. Since then, it has hosted numerous concerts and sports events, notably football, athletics, speedway and speed skating. It has an all-seated capacity of 43,000 and a total capacity of 60,000 for concerts.
