               Anstruther

Anstruther (Enster in Scots, Eanstar in Scottish Gaelic and also meaning Little Stream) is a small town in Fife, Scotland. The two Anstruthers are divided by a small stream called Dreel Burn. Anstruther lies 9 miles south-southeast of St Andrews. It is the largest community on the stretch of north-shore coastline of the Firth of Forth known as the East Neuk, with a population of about 3,500 people. The village of Cellardyke forms an easterly extension of Anstruther.

It has a large multi-use harbour, which has pleasure craft moored as well as fishing boats.  It is a working harbour with lots to see.  The Scottish Fisheries Museum is located adjacent to the harbour and the "Reaper" a 100 year old fishing boat is berthed in the harbour.  The museum displays a number of exhibits and shows what life was like at the start of the last century. The R.N.L.I. Kingdom of Fife lifeboat is based in Anstruther and we have the secret bunker nearby.

Kingsbarns Beach

At about 2 miles long, Kingsbarns beach is a walkers’ paradise. Backed by sand dunes and the famous Kingsbarns Golf Course. No commercial facilities but there are 2 picnic tables by the car park and quite disgraceful toilet facilities which seem to have been modelled on a piece of East German rolling stock painted green.

The East Neuk, or corner, is one of the main attractions of The Kingdom of Fife, Scotland. It is a stretch of coastline starting at St Andrews, which is dotted with a series of villages, such as Anstruther, Arnroach, Cellardyke, Colinsburgh, Crail, Elie, Lower Largo, Lundin Links, Pittenweem, and St Monans. Many of these villages are ancient fishing villages with picturesque harbours.

The isle of may on the “May Princess”. Go for a walk on this remarkable island, which is a important National Nature Reserve owned and run by Scottish Natural Heritage. See the remains of a 12th Century monastery & the oldest light house in Scotland, as well as incredible wildlife which include Puffins, Guillemot, Razorbill, Cormorant, Shag,
Eiderduck and many more. April to July best time for sea birds, earlier the better particularly for Puffins. Porpoise, Dolphin & Whale are often spotted, best late July & August , Seals all year round.

The missing jacket been found

Bairdstravel would like to thank the staff of the Shiptavern for finding and returning
Andy`s jacket.  Hopefully we shall be able to thank  them personal for their efforts.

 SHIP TAVERN

Bairdstravel would like to thank the barman of the Ship Tavern for making us most welcome.
Ship Tavern . Great location on the harbour front next to the Anstruther Fish Bar. One real ale is always on – usually Deuchars IPA. During the summer a second real ale is added. Pool table in the back room which is also used for live music or karaoke in the summer.

Anstruther has several other pubs the best of which are:

  • The Smugglers: A 14th century coaching inn now operated by Fox Inns. McEwans, large screen TV, pool table as centrepiece of the bar area, jukebox and gaming machine. Quiz night on Sundays.

  •
  • The Old Bank: Trendy bar in the former National Commercial Bank run by Richard, Manuela and Jeanette. Standard beer fare and good value food. Separate pool room, karaoke on Friday nights with live music on some Saturdays and Sundays. Four large self-catering apartments are available.

  • The Royal: Local's pub. Tennents and pool table in separate room.

  • The Masonic : McEwans, Tennents, Belhaven and Boddies. Real fire, gaming machine, TV and hi-fi, not forgetting the stuffed cats.
  •
  • The Salutation : The Sallie has the feel of an American Sports Bar. Large screen showing Sky Sports in main bar, table football table and gaming machine, pool room with 2 tables, separate lounge with pull down megascreen.

Geo,Deek and Alan wait for their fish supper.

We look forward to making your visit to Anstruther a memorable one and hope that through our policy of providing all customers with the same excellent standards of service and using only the freshest of local seafood, you will return and visit us again for a quality ‘fish supper’!

We are situated on the attractive harbour front in Anstruther where you can enjoy your takeaway fish and chips on the seating area opposite the shop while listening to the sounds of the sea and watching the local creel boat fishermen landing their daily catch of crab and lobster. Don’t be tempted however to feed the waiting hungry seagulls any leftovers – remember, what goes up, must come down! Should you choose to sit-in, our 52 seater restaurant offers fantastic views over the Firth of Forth and successfully combines a traditional nautical theme with a typical seaside ice cream parlour, creating an informal, relaxed and friendly atmosphere for both diners in the restaurant and those waiting to takeaway.

No visit to Anstruther is complete without sampling our award-winning fish and chips here at the Anstruther Fish Bar. We look forward to seeing you!

TRAVELLINGSCOT`S BLOG FROM HIS ANSTRUTHER TRIP

Glasgows Famous Gallon Club outing to Anstruther

Glasgows famous Gallon Club sen off on a historic memory lane trip back to Anstruther in Fife as it was 34 years since I had last visited the lovley little fishing village in Fife.Former merbers who travelled were Dougie(Chairman) myself(Vice Chairman) George,Andy,Alex,Deek(Craig),wee Geo.Wesy and new member Alan. Trip started off at 9.03am with a Desparado beer-bottled larger laced with tequila(GFGC nation drink). A few beer later and a few toilet stops we arrived at Anstruther and once checked in to the Smugglers Inn headed out to bars to see Rangers Vs Hamilton footy game.Few more beers and few bars later we headed back to get ready fr the night life as we were to met at 7.30pm ish for party and kareoke in the Smugglers Inn but three member never made it.
Alex Deek and wee Geo(who were staying at a differnt hotel) fell asleep and missed a great night with such songs as Coldplay,Mac the Knife and Living next door to Alice being sung by the GFGC members then after staying up in the residents bar till 2.10am time for bed.Up at 7.56am and straight on with the party music supplied by myself and my roomy Andy but this we due to the fact that we were probably still drunk from the night before haha.Had breakfast with Alan and Dougie - others didnt make breakfast mmmm wonder why haha. After a brisk walk along the lovley harbour and front it was time to sample the Ship Taverns local delights which lasted till about 6pm before heading back to the Smugglers for a farewell drink. Many thanks go to the staff at the Smugglers for putting up with us but especially to our mini bus driver Brian for all the stops on the way home-- he truly is the "Captian of our Ship"
