GREYHOUND BUS TRIP AROUND WESTERN STATES
OCTOBER1983
After a year of planning it was nearly time to set off on our adventure to the other side of America. Our rucksacks were packed, our tickets had arrived and there was only time to say our goodbyes.
Monday 10th October, 1983. We left our home in Renfrew, Scotland travelled from Glasgow ~ London by train. We stayed the night in a clatty hotel in Victoria. Our Spanish host has put bars over The windows (to stop anyone escaping) we of course never slept a wink. That was our first travel experience of the trip not a very good one.
After a sleepless night, we caught the tube to Gatwick Airport. We were on the British Caledonian flight to Los Angeles departing at 9.30am. The aircraft was quite old so there was plenty of room for my long Legs.Good news the drinks were on the house .So that helped make this long flight a bit more pleasant. Round about 4.00 in the afternoon local time the flight crew announce we are approaching Los Angeles.
Los Angeles looked huge from the sky and it took more than 20 minutes before we land at LAX Los Angeles Airport . This is the first time we had been to the States so we were very excited .
We collect our bags and we head off to find our hotel. We had spent nearly a year planning this trip and it all went out the window .when we ask the local cop how to get to our digs. Our hotel was downtown on Olympic Boulevard but what we didn't know was that Olympic Boulevard was 20 miles long and we didn't have a clue where the Royal Olympic Host Hotel was. We eventually found it.
We decided to go Out for a walk to try and get a feel for the place we weren't out for long as we were a bit jet lagged after the long flight.
WED. 12th Oct. We took RTA bus 484 to Universal Studios where we spent the day. This was our first ever visit to a theme park and we really enjoyed it. .
We boarded the True Glamour Tram to go behind the scenes and experience the effects of Movie and TV making . We sat next to this Japanese Couple for the Ride. As the tram goes along we enjoy the the thrill of the movies. Our friends from Japan are really enjoying themself until they meet up with Jaws . THE DEADLY SHARK ATTACKS THE TRAM and our friends nearly have a heartattack and their camera goes up in the air.

FRIDAY OCT 21 SAN FRANCISCO
Went to Jail Alcatraz Island is one of Golden Gate National Recreation Area's most popular destinations, offering a close-up look at a historic and infamous federal prison long off-limits to the public. Visitors to the island cannot only explore the remnants of the prison, but can also learn about the Indian occupation of 1969 - 1971, early military fortifications (the first U.S. fort on the coast), and the West Coast's first (and oldest operating) lighthouse. These structures and the island's many natural features - gardens, tide pools, bird colonies, and bay views beyond compare - are being preserved by the National Park Service which is working to make it accessible to visitors, preserve its buildings, protect its birds and other wildlife, and interpret its history.

SATURDAY OCT 29TH Santa Monica
GREAT NIGHT AT THE OLD MUCKY DUCK
Sadly Mucky Duck has been transformed into Capo, one of the most visually beautiful, alluring and grown-up restaurants to open in Santa Monica.
Santa Monica enjoys an average of 325 days of sunshine a yearBecause of its location, nestled on the vast and open Santa Monica Bay, morning fog and haze are a common phenomenon in May, June and early July (caused by ocean temperature variations and currents). Locals have a particular terminology for this phenomenon: the "May Gray" and the "June Gloom". Overcast skies are common for June mornings, but usually the strong sun burns the fog off by noonNonetheless, it will sometimes stay cloudy and cool all day during June, even as other parts of the Los Angeles area will enjoy sunny skies and warmer temperatures. At times, the sun shines east of 20th St., while the beach area is overcast.
